St Mary's Eaton Bray: October 2005

Carols at Carols

SMILE are holding their annual charity event with "Carols at Carols", on 6th December at the home of Carol Mockett, to raise money for the disabled facilities as part of the Eaton Bray Village Hall restoration programme.

The event will start at 8pm, with musical accompaniment from David Radwell and soloist Natalie Spence. The evening will include mulled wine, mince pies and a raffle. Tickets are £5 and available from Catherine Evans or Elizabeth Ryder. If you need a lift, please contact Diana. If you can't come, please consider making a donation.

Choir Afternoon

The choir of St Mary's Eaton Bray will be singing informally many of the pieces you love so much on the afternoon of Saturday, 12 Novermber 2005 from 2.00-4.00pm. If you have any requests, we will try to include them in the program! Just let David Radwell know in advance.

Entrance is free but refreshments will be on sale and we would ask you to make a donation to our charity of the year, Emmaus. Why not come along and listen for some or all of the time and enjoy some afternoon tea. We look forward to seeing you there!

All Souls' Day

Wednesday (2nd November) is All Souls' Day. There will be a Requiem Eucharist at 9.30am and a Sung Eucharist at 8.00pm, to which the families of all those parishioners whose funerals have been conducted by the parish over the past year have been invited.

Please make sure that there is a good representation of the regular congregation to welcome them, and to join in our prayers for our departed loved ones.

All Saints' Sunday

Next Sunday (30th October) is All Saints' Sunday. Morning services will be at the usual times, and in the afternoon All Saints', Dagnall celebrates its Patronal Festival with a Sung Eucharist at 4.00pm, when the Preacher will be the Revd David Jenkins, Superintendent Minister of the Aylesbury Methodist Circuit and formerly Minister in Dunstable and Dagnall.

Please come and join our fellow-parishioners in Dagnall for this important celebration.

Barn Dance

Pictures from the Barn Dance held on 8th October are now available. See Barn Dance for more.

Update 2: Saturday 19 November, 12.00-2.00pm, Eaton Bray Village Hall, in aid of church funds. We need goods for all the usual stalls, so please start now to bake, make jam, knit, sew, carve - or whatever your particular skill is! We also need plenty of people to come and buy, so invite your friends and neighbours to come along. Ploughman's lunches will be server.

Seeround

There are still copies of the Diocesan newspaper "Seeround" and the recent St Mary's Newsletter, and some spare copies of this month's "Focus" available on the chest beside the south door.

We want you to know what is happening, so please take copies of these if you haven't already received them.

Leading Small Groups

The North Chilterns Group is running another short training course under the guidance of Canon Robin Brown, the Diocesan Local Ministry Officer.

Anyone who is interested in learning a bit about leading small discussion groups is invited to attend the three sessions at Kensworth Church Hall on Wednesday evenings, 26 October, 9 November and 23 November, 7.45-9.30pm.

Church Repairs

Passers-by will have noticed the scaffolding along the south side of the church. Work is in hand to replace the lead covering the Lady Chapel roof, and to investigate a slight sag in one of the beams of that roof.

The estimated cost of this work is over £20,000, and while the Fabric Fund is generously supported by the Carnival each year, we shall have to dip deep into reserves to meet the cost. Of course, if well-wishers would like to contribute towards the cost, the Vicar or the Churchwardens would be delighted to hear from them.

The work should be completed during this month (unless worse problems are revealed when the roof is fully uncovered).

Eaton Bray with Edlesborough Parochial Church Council

The September meeting began with a short silence to remember Norah Coates, who had served on the P.C.C. and at St Mary's faithfully for many years, including serving two terms as Churchwarden, and who would be greatly missed.

The distribution of the proceeds of this year's Carnival, £10,000, among many local charities was agreed, half going to St Mary's Fabric Fund, and half the remainder to the Dagnall Church Extension Fund.

Plans were finalized for a Congregational Meeting to be held on 20 September, and the forward planning of a number of new ventures was continued, some of which have already been announced. Details were given of progress on the repair work to the south transept roof, which would be completed before the autumn, although necessary changes to the specification would make the final cost considerably greater than had originally been estimated.

It was agreed to re-hang the Roll of Honour within the church, preserving this important record of those who were on active service during the First World War, compiled during those years as they joined up.
