St Mary's Eaton Bray: May 2007
St Mary's Parochial Church Council Meeting
We met on 10th May at All Saints Church, Dagnall. The meeting was the first to be held after the Annual PCC meeting when members were appointed to the PCC for the coming year. The meeting agreed the new responsibilities of the newlyelected Church Council.
This year's Parish Project, the Chiltern Centre for Multiple Sclerosis, has got off to an excellent start with the £50 raised by Sally Taylor's card sale being added to by £320 from a coffee morning organised by Mark Saccoccio and £450 from a stall on Leighton Buzzard market run by Joan and Robert Calder. The next event for this cause will be the Open Gardens Scheme on 10th June.
Unfortunately, the spring cleaning of the church had to be postponed, due to lack of available help. It has been re-scheduled for 26th and 27th July, and anyone who can lend a hand (and elbow) will be most welcome.
The "Friends of St Mary's" launch evening was a success and several events are already planned. The first will be an organ concert by Liverpool Cathedral organist Ian Tracey on 2nd June. There will be monthly coffee mornings on the last Saturday of every month starting on 30th June, 10.30 to 12.00. Weather permitting, it will be held in the grounds of St Mary's. During the school holiday, a children's entertainer will be in attendance.
Plans for the Village Carnival on 7th July are well in hand, although more help is needed for the after show clear up. If any able-bodied people can help to clear Edlesborough Green after the show it would be a great help to the small band of stalwarts who stay on after this wonderful event.

The Friends of St Mary's are promoting a celebrity Organ Recital by Ian Tracey, Organist of Liverpool (Anglican) Cathedral on Saturday (2nd June) at 7.30pm in St Mary's.
His programme will be a popular one, but we can expect a virtuoso performance - one not to be missed.
Tickets will be £7 including wine and nibbles. Make sure you are part of this important occasion.
Mothers' Union Eaton Bray with Edlesborough
On Wednesday, 14th March, Nigel Watson entertained the Mothers’ Union with his talk and slides on India. Having been to the subcontinent three times on business, Nigel and his wife Georgina took a ‘trip of a life time’ on a tour designed by Nigel from New Delhi to Jaipur and ending in Goa for a few days well earned relaxation!
It was a journey of contrasts from the amazing, enormous, jewel encrusted, ornate marble palaces, forts and temples to the plight of the ‘street children’ who quite literally live on the streets without homes, schooling, possibly parents and no obvious means of support. Nevertheless, most people seemed happy, and the amount of smiles very noticeable.
The most beautiful building was, of course, the Taj Mahal at Agre, shown from many different angles, but also a ‘Diana’ picture with Georgina and also a happy ‘together’ one of them both taken at the front of this temple of love built by Mughal Shah Jahan (died 1666) in memory of his wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal. More towns, more buildings, all impressive. Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, had magnificent buildings too, many based on astronomical themes, and the largest statues made of silver in the world – as confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.
Travelling was by both train and car; the train having three classes, - 1st with individual carriages; 2nd advertised as having ‘chairs’ and, surprise, surprise, 3rd – no chairs! Passengers alighted from both sides of the train, with or without a platform!! Also interesting, travelling by car, as most drivers seemed to drive on the shady side of the road, in which ever direction they were progressing.
Nigel’s photography is excellent and this was very evident when they reached Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary. Two trips a day produced wonderful pictures of birds, flowers, other animals and eventually an elusive tiger very well camouflaged by the undergrowth but seen clearly through the long range lens.
Then to Goa, and a more relaxed life style, very different from the hustle and bustle of the cities. Beautiful beaches, beautiful sunsets and lots of fresh fish which is so plentiful that it can be caught by just walking into the sea. The whole village becomes involved in the catch by using a large circular net and pulling it on to the beach, where it is cooked in the many food shacks on the beach and eaten immediately. No-one goes hungry in that region.
The twenty two members present enjoyed an interesting and informative afternoon.
Vicar's Letter - May 2007
May brings round the annual Christian Aid Week Appeal, with its public events and house-to-house collections. I have no hesitation in asking all FOCUS readers to be generous in their response. We hope that our collectors will call on every house in our villages during the week 14-19 May, and you will find an envelope for this collection with this magazine. And remember, if you are a UK tax payer, you can make your gift worth 28% more by completing the Gift Aid declaration on the envelope, thus enabling Christian Aid to reclaim the income tax you paid on that gift.
