Tom Cowper - R.I.P.
The death of Tom Cowper takes from St Mary's its oldest regular worshipper. At the age of 99, he was still coming to church whenever he could, and greatly lamenting the occasions when he couldn't.
Tom (and his wife, Eva, who died in 1982) moved to the village in readiness for retirement from the retail grocery business, and soon become significant figures in village life. Tom became an active member of the church, and served as sidesman for many years, as well as being Churchwarden in the 1970s, and deputizing at the organ on many occasions. He read the lessons in a clear voice and with profound understanding, and that was still true on the last occasion when he did so, just a month before his 99th birthday.
Tom was always cheerful, and had a fund of humorous stories, which he delighted to tell, and right to the end he preserved his enquiring mind and interest in people. May he now enter into the joy of his Lord.
